Ken

Betty Hume,

We at the Pottery Workshop Education Center had the privilege to have to host an Australian group coordinated by Mike Moore and Jeff Lees. This group comprised of a special person, Betty Hume.

Betty Hume was born on February 5, 1928, the year of the dragon. This is an interview about her painting and ceramic career journey till her current age of 91.

Ken:

Ken:

Ken:

Ken:How/when did your interest in ceramics started?

Betty:I went to art school for three years, and I have been interested with anything to do with art, painting, needle work, anything like that. Did do I little bit of sculpture. But my main job was working as a scenic artist, all my life. Painting stage scenery for operas and ballet used to at my free time go to night school and I did do pottery with a man named Peter Rushforth.

Who was quite well known in Sydney. I used to do one night a week to start with. This was when my real ceramics (interest) started because Peter was an interesting man. Very enthusiastic and made his students very enthusiastic

Ken: You got the ceramic bug.

Betty: Yes, I got the ceramic bug. So, but I was still working, so I couldn’t take it up seriously. After retirement, I was able to take up and I did a three year course in ceramics, so I was able to study it deeper and do a little bit more and sit the various exams. And managed and got though them.

Ken: There were exams for ceramics? I am surprised.

Betty: We had a lot of verbal, written work, I did China. Other people did Persian and Korean(history) but I followed from China to Korean to Japan. We all had to pick a different period.

Ken:

Goanna

Ken:

Ken:Do you prefer sculptural or Functional ware?

Betty: I prefer sculptural to functional ware.

At the moment, I often do Goannas, they are big lizards that are found around Australia and I fit them on a pot, put a big lizard on it.

I like making things like that, making animals, a bit quirky. But as I got older, tend to help younger people now, we have a society call Pyraa Pottery Society. Pat and I help new people because they used to run a course at the tech school for potters. The government decided it was a waste of money and wont help financially, so now we fill in that space. We get people who have never done pottery and come along to help them and start them off. Pat and I are helping them with glazes as they know nothing about glazes.

We run two courses, one was how to mix your glazes in 100g batches and do testers, and now they get to a stage where they can go a little bit more. They can glaze their own pots. We only have four electric kilns, so we can keep a healthy turnover. We do stoneware as well as earthenware, we have specific racks for each kinds of clay.

Ken: That’s when the clays starts mixing

Betty: We do have worries, but for beginners they can only use stoneware clay. We won’t let them use earthenware clays because it melts. We have a demonstration piece of what happens if earthenware clay gets into a stoneware firing. I personally have a gas kiln and a wheel. I do a lot of work at home. Used to do lots more, but my husband passed away and he was a great help. And now I have to do his garden at the same time. I do not have much time these days to do pottery.

Ken:

What drives you even at this age?

Betty: I do enjoy teaching. I love seeing results of having students and seeing the result of how they come. I always had to teach people because I was the head of the scenic art department, how to paint scenery. Did a lot of props, that was the sculptural component. I would do the clay version, in the prop department, they will make the actual thing, I or my assistant will paint it.

I am a very very lucky person. I have always done a job that I love all my life. Now I am doing a hobby that I love.

I enjoy making pots and love seeing the results.
